Statement from opposition party Al Wefaq on publication of BICI report:
In light of today’s release of the report by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry “BICI”, Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society has made the following media statement.
The BICI report released today, Wednesday, November 23, 2011 has irrevocably proved the patriotism of the Bahraini revolution and that no involvement of neither the Islamic Republic of Iran nor other parties recorded pertaining to its outbreak or continuity. The fundamentals of the revolution have been, and will be, to achieve true democracy through an elected government; an elected parliament with full legislative and monitoring authorities; the abolishment of gerrymandering; an impartial judicial branch of power; and security for all.
Al-Wefaq stressed that the report has verified the authenticity of both the discourse and information released by the Opposition and all worldwide human rights organizations over the past ten months that documented gross violations against universal human rights like, among other things, violation of the right to freedom of association and peaceful assembly, and the right to freedom of speech and media that have been in practice by pro-government media outlets.
Al-Wefaq said that the report proved the occurrence of unlawful killings; torture; arbitrary arrests; mosques demolishing; employees dismissal; depriving students of scholarships and suspending them; excessive use of force by security personnel; violations in the arresting process; mistreatment of prisoners and those in custody; trials and detention for practicing the freedom of speech, the freedom of assembly, and the freedom of association; non-disclosure of prisoners’ information for weeks; and the official media use of defamatory and offensive discourse accompanied by incitation while coverage of the events.
Al Wefaq clarified that the report in general made mention to the political crisis that is rooted in the current dictator government. It also pointed at the route to a political solution through shifting to the elected government and the peaceful transfer of power by adopting the concept “Rule by the People”.
Al-Wefaq believed that the report, after it certified the systematic, gross, and deliberate violations have severely spread its shadow on the political, human rights, economic, social, humanity aspects. It highlights the importance of the resignation of the current government that committed all such crimes and the formation of a national rescue government whose hands are clean of bloodshed, torture, and mosques demolishing to handle a transitional period to realize real political reforms, is keen to transform to democracy, and is able to implement the whole recommendations outlined by the report.
